The love I have growing for you guys is so large. Especially looking at this time of year, & how people tend to reflect on where they have been, where their current trajectory is taking them, and where they wish it would actually take them.
This is so close to my heart because remember, I got into interior design by accident. I got into it because I wanted so much more in my life than I had access to as a single mom who was in a minimal growth potential corporate healthcare job. I didn't think I had options, & then decided I didn't have the option NOT to have options. So I blazed a new path. A controversial path.
MANY of you who find me, whether it's on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube or online search, many of you are in similar situations. You want something different, you want something you love, you want something that is your own, you want more financial freedom, you want a way to have an impact on other people's lives. It can be any of those, a combination or other reasons too! But what we have in common, is that you may not think it's in your cards. Can you do it without a degree? Can you really teach yourself the skills? Can you get paid jobs without any real experience? Can you do it without leaving your current job? Yes, yes, yes, yes, YES! The fact that I can help you discover those "yes's", that I can give you a head start on where to learn what & how to train your eyes & your brains to know how to think like a designer...gives me endless joy.
The fact that we are here together, on the eve of where all your 2025 manifestations are going to be set, & I can say with confidence...stick around & we will manifest this one into realized greatness, is more holiday joy for me than you can imagine.
Now, let's discuss a couple practical interior design tips:
Number One - Challenge yourself to get an interior design job by the end of the first week of January. Yes, really. I want you to practice finding opportunity within your family, groups & communities while you're around them most now. Not a paid job (I mean if they offer, sure) but a practice job. So how can you do it? First of all, this means you have to start sharing your plan of actually becoming a designer. Second, it means getting comfortable asking! Third, you'll use your own eyes, and ears to see where a small project could be just sitting there waiting for attention. For example, I just helped a friend do a quick, inexpensive facelift on her basement, and master bedroom. It wasn't a full job in either space. But it was a great little project. One that you could do too. So when you're at a friend, or family member over the holiday, pay attention to any small area you think you could upgrade even slightly. And then ask if they would let you practice on it! Listen to the things people are saying, they may be sharing that something in their home, office, business, parent's home, grandparents home, could use an upgrade, or isn't super functional etc. Take the opportunity.
Number Two - Practice writing up a proposal. So often overlooked & so often the cause of angst & frustration for your client & definitely for you...is the poor communication of plans, services & expectations right from the start. So I want you to practice writing out a project proposal for a potential (make believe) client. And then I want you to copy & paste it into ChatGPT & ask it where it could be improved. Specifically ask it where it isn't clear on plans or details that could lead to struggles with the clients expectations on the project, & what your services do & don't include. Then come to any of my videos and put in the comments "DID #2!" so I can ask you about how it went!!
With that, I am wishing you & all your loved ones, the most wonderful start to this new year. May it be nothing but all you hope & dream for, and everything more than you are currently even capable of imagining it to be.
Much love,
Shira
